Port Blair, Oct 16: The Andaman PWD has taken up the work of trimming branches of old trees in war-footing but for the task the massive department is risking lives of low level employees and workers. Andaman Sheekha had earlier highlighted about this issue but again today it was found that a low level employee was asked to climb up an approximately 30 feet tall tree at RGT road to trim branches.
Photographs available here shows that the worker was allowed to trim branches without any safety gears or a lifeline.
One could easily imagine in case of any mistake the worker would have fallen directly on the road, which would surely have resulted in his death. When the APWD is carrying out tree branch trimming works officially then why can’t APWD ensure safety of workers? It is always better to spend some money in safety equipment for workers than releasing Rs. 1 Lakh or Rs. 2 Lakhs from LG’s Relief Fund for every such victim.
