Port Blair, April 29: A local entrepreneur and social worker of Andaman and Nicobar Islands Mr. Abdul Rashid along with his team of volunteers has till date helped around 1200 needy families with essential ration articles. Alone Mr. Rashid has contributed an amount of Rs 06 lakhs to help the needy.
Mr. Rashid a resident of Haddo, Port Blair, the area which is thickly populated with daily wage workers, learned that many residents of the area were in trouble and are struggling to manage their livelihood due to the lockdown.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, Mr. Rashid said he initially started distributing the essential ration commodities in their area but later on he started getting calls from South Andaman and other parts of the city for help.
“We distributed Rice (5kg), Wheat (2kg), Haldi Powder (100grams), Chilli powder (100 grams), Amul Taaza (1litre), Coriander Powder (100grams), Sugar (1kg), Onion (2kg), Tea, Egg, Pulses, Garlic, Tomato, Potato, Oil et cetera to each family,” said Mr. Rashid.
“I have also got the support of Rs. 40,000 from the public and we will continue to do this till the lockdown continues,” Mr. Rashid added.
Mr. Rashid also said that there are demands from the needy now to provide them cooked food and he and his team are planning to support them with cooked food shortly.
Mr. Libin Kumar, Mr. Mansoor Khan, Mr. Joseph, Mr. Asif, Mr. Anwar, Mr. Mohammed Iqbal, Mr. Ashik, Mr. Rafeeque, Mr. Siddhu, Mr. Rehman, Mr. Najeeb, Mr. Aslam and Mr. Mohammed Ali are the other volunteers of this unnamed group.
