Port Blair, Nov 29: On 29/11/2019, Andaman & Nicobar Police has launched an initiative called as Police Mitra. The Director General of Police Shri. Dependra Pathak, IPS, launched the event at the Conference Hall of Police Headquarters. All the Senior Police Officials of Andaman Nicobar Police, Counselors and PRI members of South Andaman District attended the launching ceremony. The Police Mitra is an initiative of Hon’ble Prime Minister of India which was highlighted in the DGP/IGP conference and directed to commence the same in all States/UTs around the country.
A welcome speech was given by Shri. Manoj C., IPS Superintendent of Police, South Andaman District underlining the mandate, duties and responsibilities of the Police Mitra.
The inaugural address was given by the Director General of Police, Andaman & Nicobar Police Shri. Dependra Pathak, IPS in which he emphasized upon the need to have a setup of Police Mitra to involve members of civil society in prevention of crime, maintenance of law and order and for better communication with citizens as a whole for the safety and security of public. He also focused that the services of ‘Police Mitra’ will be very useful in the prevention and detection of crime, coastal security, tourist policing, protection of aboriginal tribes, juvenile aid, self-defense camps for girls, night patrolling, promoting communal harmony, disaster management etc. They can also make significant contributions in maintaining peace in their respective areas and act as a bridge between the police and public.
The DGP also emphasized the need for awareness among the citizens on fundamental duties enshrined in the Constitution of India under article 51A. He also discussed to evolve a mechanism for equal emphasis on fundamental duties along with fundamental rights.
Further, 17 citizens from South Andaman District have volunteered to be Police Mitra in the first phase. These citizens have been selected based on their antecedents and past contributions in solving public issues and their support towards Police functioning. The DGP issued Certificates of Appointment to the newly appointed Police Mitra. The DGP also cautioned the newly appointed Police Mitra to be judicious and not to misuse the new role.
