Port Blair, Nov 13: The lawyers of Andaman Islands have called for ‘Pen Down’ protest against unwanted delay caused for hearing of several cases infront of Deputy Commissioner of South Andaman.
As per the lawyers, the Deputy Commissioner of South Andaman is issuing notice to litigants to appear before the Deputy Commissioner at 4.00 PM with respect to the cases pending before the Deputy Commissioners.
Litigants engage lawyers to defend their case and lawyers are reaching at DC office at 3.45 PM but it has been seen that the DC often is taking the matter late in the evening, sometimes at 7.00 PM, sometimes at 8.00 PM or 8.30 PM.
As per lawyers, despite several requests have been made to the Deputy Commissioner, the DC failed to hear the same and continued to take the matter in the late hours i.e after office hours.
“Neither the Deputy Commissioners nor the Administration has taken any step to resolve the issue, so that the matter can be heard by the DC before 5.00 PM,” said a lawyer.
As the Administration has failed to take any steps, the Advocates of A & N Islands have called for ‘Pen Down’ protest, till the issue is resolved by fixing the time by the DC.
Today again lawyers have decided to continue the protest till the problem is resolved.
As per sources, the matter will be taken before the Hon’ble High Court on 18 November. The Pen Down began on 29 October 2019.
