Port Blair, July 01: The Green Island foundation, an NGO in association with members and public of four Panchayats viz Shivapuran, Swadesh Nagar, Harinagar and Basantipur, today organized a massive dharna at Billyground Bazaar over long pending demands of people of the region.
The agitating people demanded repair of Rural Roads, sufficient staffs in PHC Billyground, proper service of BSNL, uninterrupted power supply, issue of timber to contractors of Port Blair from Betapur Saw Mill only after fulfilling the demands of people of N & M Andaman, issue of sand from Forest Depot of Betapur etc. The dharna began at 10.30 AM.
Later today a rally was also brought out by the public in which more than 500 people participated.
As per details in the evening the Deputy Commissioner of North and Middle Andaman Mr Awanish Kumar reached Billyground and spoke to the agitating people and assured immediate steps but the agitating people were not convinced with the assurances given by the Deputy Commissioner.
Later when Deputy Commissioner of N & M Andaman convinced the agitating people more, they agreed not to organise Chakka-Jam tomorrow on the ATR as it was earlier planned.
The agitating people decided to write a letter to the administration again tomorrow highlighting important demands and they also agreed to give 10 days time to the Administration.
However, the agitating people added that if the demands of public are not fulfilled by the Administration within 10 days then they will organize Chakka-Jam at Andaman Trunk Road.
