Port Blair, June 03: Five people have been sent to 14 days of judicial custody for stealing 14 gunny-bags of Areca-nuts from Shantipur village under Swadeshnagar Panchayat.
According to the reports, a widow of Shantipur village, namely Smti Shobha Adhikari, locked the door of her residence and went to Port Blair for her treatment. Before proceeding to Port Blair she stored 14 gunny-bags (196 kg) of Areca-nuts in her house, whose market value is around Rs.35,280/-.
As per reports, three boys of same locality were aware about the absence of the house owner and they took the opportunity to steal the gunny-bags of Areca-nuts. They sold all the bags of Areca-nut to two vendors of Billyground local market.
When Smti Shobha Adhikari returned on 01 Jun19 from Port Blair, she found 14 gunny-bags filled with Areca-nuts missing. She immediately lodged a complaint in PS Billyground about the theft. Under the leadership of SHO Billyground a team was formed and within six to eight hours the police team apprehended all accused and today they were produced before the Honb’le CJM Court at Mayabunder, from where they were sent to 14 days of Judicial Custody. Public of Shantipur village lauded the efforts of SHO and his team for their swift action.
