Port Blair, Nov 18: In a tragic incident a newborn baby died at Primary Health Center, Chouldary on Saturday morning following which people of the area protested and demanded immediate action against the Medical Incharge and the nursing staffs.
According to parents of the 25 days old girl child, they had brought the baby to the hospital on Friday night but, without making proper entry in hospital records, the child was given some medications and was not admitted in the hospital for proper care. Sources said that the baby was having breathing problems because of cold.
Instead of taking proper care of referring the baby to G B Pant Hospital, the baby was released by night. When child developed more complications, panic stricken parents brought the child to the PHC Chouldari again on Saturday morning, where the child breathed her last.
The shattered father of the new born baby, Mr. Uttam Mandal, told Andaman Sheekha that if the doctor would have shifted the child to G B Pant Hospital on Friday night, his child would have been alive today.
The Pradhan of Chouldari Panchayat, Mr Mohan Haldar told Andaman Sheekha that he and around 50 other people decided to sit on protest in front of the hospital against such irresponsible attitude of hospital staffs.
Mr. Halder also called up the Director of Health Services over phone and demanded inquiry in this matter.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, the Pradhan of Chouldary village said that the short protest was withdrawn after he got assurance from the Director of Health Services that the Medical Incharge of PHC Chouldari will be transferred immediately and also disciplinary action will be taken against the nursing staffs, who failed to make proper entry and give proper care to the child.
Last rights of the 25 days old was carried out on Saturday morning, it is learnt.
This is not the first time, when such incidents have been reported in these Islands and won’t be last until and unless, strict action is initiated against responsible medical staffs by DHS. Only transfer of Doctors and some action for name sake will certainly not send a strong message across Andaman and Nicobar Islands. The mobile number Director of Health Services was unavailable on Sunday evening for a comment.
