Port Blair, Nov 18: In an exemplary act of bravery, a police constable posted in Police Station Chatham has saved a life at Chatham Jetty by risking his own life.
According to reports, on 16 November at around 11:00 PM, the Chatham PS got an information that one man under heavy influence of liquor is creating nuisance onboard MV Karmatang.
One receipt of information one Head Constable Victor Dung Dung and one Police Constable Kabir Kumar, reached Chatham Jetty and found that a person, under heavy influence of liquor, is creating problems onboard the vessel, MV Karmatang. The person was later identified as Mr. Sandeep Khujur, a 38 year resident of Wimberlygunj.
On seeing this, the police party tried to disembark Mr. Khujur from the vessel but he started running and later he jumped into the sea. After jumping into the sea he started swimming towards deep sea soon, as per eye witnesses, the person, under heavy influence of liquor, was found struggling to keep himself afloat.
On seeing this police constable, Mr. Kabir Kumar, who was in uniform, without wasting time, jumped into the sea from Chatham Jetty and saved life of the person. Soon the person was shifted to Hospital for treatment.
As per eye witnesses the Police Constable had shown highest level of professionalism by jumping into the sea and saving one life without caring for his own. Sadly, the trend of honoring such brave Jawans with Andaman’s highest civilian honor, LG’s Commendation Certificate, is long gone, this is perhaps the right time to honor such brave person, so that it motivates others.
