Rangat, Middle Andaman, June 17: Heavy rainfall since this morning have created a flood like situation in various parts of Middle Andaman region, displacing hundreds of families.
“We have visited Billyground area, no doubt there is water in low lying areas but water is receding now. We are going towards rain hit areas of Rangat but our vehicle is also struck in rainwater inundated road. I have already issued directions to the Tehsilder of Rangat to set up relief camp at Rangat,” Mr. M K Sharma, the Deputy Commissioner (incharge) of N & M Andaman told ‘Andaman Sheekha’ over phone today.
According to reports available here rainwater has flooded hundreds of houses in Janakpur, Dashrat Pur-2, Dashrat Pur-3, Mithila-1, Sita Pur village of Rangat Island, Laxman Pur, Urmilapur, Kalsi villages of Bakultala region, Shanti Pur, Duke Nagar, Swadesh Nagar, Duratang, Hari Nagar, Pinaki Nagar, Jaipur (one part), Badam Nallah, Paresh Nagar, Praful Nagar of Billyground Island and RK Gram, Khudiram Pur, Subash Gram, Desh Bandhu Gram and Madhupur village of Diglipur Island.
“We witnessed unexpected rain. In last 40 to 50 years we never witnessed such situation. We have set up a number of relief camps across middle Andaman. Alone inRangatIslandnearly 400 families have been affected,” Mr. P Prasad, the Adhyaksh of North and Middle Andaman told ‘Andaman Sheekha’ today.
According to reports, the rain water have also washed away cattle and livestock and caused heavy damage to crop and paddy field in Middle Andaman region.
There are also reports that water level is high in KalpongriverofDiglipurIsland.
“Nearly 400 to 500 families have been hit by heavy rainfall in Billyground region alone. We have informed about this to the district Administration and action has been initiated to set up a relief camp for rain hit people atBillygroundSeniorSecondary School,” Uttam Mandal the Up Adhyaksh of North and Middle Andaman Zilla Parishad told ‘Andaman Sheekha’ today.
There is total power cut in Middle Andaman region since morning. Fire Brigade and Police personnel are rescuing people from rainwater inundated areas.
Sources conformed that the rainwater flooded various parts of Andaman Trunk Road, the life line of North and Middle Andaman, and disrupted movement of traffic.
Rain waters have also inundated Hari Nagar Panchayat Building, Cooperative Bank of Billyground and damaged properties and documents. (With inputs from Diglipur and Middle Andaman Correspondent)
