Coast Guard Andaman & Nicobar Region conducted a coastal cleanup drive all across the Northern and Southern group of Islands on 17 Sep 16. The event under the aegis of “Swachh Sagar Abhiyan” was conducted by Coast Guard stations at Diglipur, Mayabunder, Hutbay, Kamorta and Campbell Bay. Coastal cleanup drives at Macchi Dera beach in Hutbay, Kamartang beach at Mayabunder, Kalipur beach at Diglipur and local beaches at Kamorta and Campell Bay witnessed participation of an estimated 1000 people from various institutions including School & College students, NCC cadets, Fire & Forest services, Police organisations, NGO workers and Coast Guard fraternity participated in the event.
The event was conducted to spread awareness on the paramount importance of maintaining and preserving the marine environment in the Islands where livelihood and sustenance majorly depends on maritime activity. The enthusiasm and zeal towards the overwhelming presence of volunteers for the noble cause was highly commendable.
