Port Blair, July 27: As a part of 67th Van Mahotsava celebration, a mass tree plantation was organized by the Prison Department of A&N Administration. Smt Geeta Rani Verma, Inspector General, Prisons was the chief guest on the occasion. She expressed her happiness over the fact that even prisoners are well oriented towards plantation activities, safe guarding the environment and conservation issues. About 250 plants of various indigenous, ornamental, shade providing and fruit bearing trees were planted all around the road side of New District Prison by the officials and staff of Prison Department.
The chief guest appreciated the effort of plantation drive of Prison Department in association with Forests & Extension and Publicity Division of A&N Islands to make pollution free environment and also encouraged Prison Officials to adopt more eco-friendly measures.
Mr Babu Lal Meena (DANICS), Superintendent of Prisons extended his thanks on behalf of Prison Department to Mr Dharma Rao, Forest Ranger and Mr Giri, Forester of Forest & Extension and Publicity Division for their support to make the event as a grand success.
The programme attended by Mr Sanjay Mesheck, Councillor of PBMC, Mr Simon S. Iyer, from an NGO, the APWD Officials and CRPF Officials alongwith Prison Staffs and Prison inmates. The programme was presided by Mr O. Mohammed Haneefa, Deputy Jailor and Concluded with the vote of thanks proposed by Mohammed Hanif, Jailor of Prison Department.
