Port Blair, May 17: To create awareness and to encourage the dairy cattle owners of Andaman and Nicobar Islands to adopt artificial insemination for improving the genetic potential of locally available cows and to rear cross bred calves under proper management, the Department of Animal Husbandry and Veterinary Services provides grant-in-aid to selected panchayats to conduct Livestock Show and Calf Rallies. The event is conducted by the respective gram panchayat and awards are given to the winner of Best Cow, Best Heifer and Best Cross-bred calf category.
The Gram Panchayat, Humferygunj organized the livestock show on the 22nd of April, 2016. The cattle and calves in the competition were judged by a team of jurist consisting of Dr. Bikar Singh and K. Mohammed, Senior Veterinary Officers, DAH&VS; and Pradhan, GP Humferygunj.
The cows belonging to Smt Meena, r/o Indra Nagar, Heifer belonging to Shri. Ranjit Roy, r/o Manglutan and calf belonging to Smt. Kamla Devi of Indranagar won the first prize in their respective category. The cows of Smt. Mukkamal and Smt. Jaya, heifers of Smt. Dharma Rao and Smt. Jaya and cross bred calves of Smt. Veeramma and Smt. Alagamma won the second and third prize in their respective category.
The prizes were given away by the Pradhan, Humfery Gram Panchayat at a simple function held at community hall.
