Port Blair, Jan 29: On receipt of complaints regarding exploitation of consumers especially the tourists visiting Havelock Island by way of overcharging by certain section of shopkeepers on packaged drinking water and soft drinks etc. this Directorate conducted surprise inspection during this month and found nine shopkeepers selling the commodities in excess of the Maximum Retail Price (MRP), thus violating the provisions contained under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009.
As such, all the offenders were booked under the relevant provisions envisaged under the Legal Metrology Act and substantial fine as per rule have been imposed on the offenders.
Further, it is for the information of all the shopkeepers of this UT that charging of the rate of packaged commodities in excess of Maximum Retail Price (MRP) is a violation of the Rules/Regulations of the Legal Metrology (Packaged Commodities) Rules, 2011 framed under the Legal Metrology Act, 2009 and advised to refrain themselves from such unfair trade practices else stringent legal action as deemed fit shall be initiated against them.
It is appealed to all the consumers that in case of any complaints in this regard, such as overcharging beyond MRP, obliteration of MRP etc. the same may be brought to notice in writing to the Directorate of Civil Supplies & Consumer Affairs, Port Blair.
