Port Blair, Jan 29: Two Naval officers of the Andaman and Nicobar Command unfurled the tri-color in farthest reaches of the Indian Republic on the occasion of the 67th Republic Day on Tuesday. Lt. Cdr Shailesh Tyagi, a Marine Commando and a Nao Sena Gallantry medal awardee on two occasions along with Lt. Cdr. Anurag Sharma, a Navy Diver, commemorated the Republic Day in true Naval spirit. The officers trekked to Mount Harriet, the highest point in South Andaman at 1,200 ft and hoisted the tricolour at Kala Pathar, where Indian prisoners were executed by being pushed into the valley prior independence. The Naval officers wished to pay tribute to martyrs and honour their struggles that culminated in the Indian Republic. The Naval divers then went on to unfurl the Tricolors 40 feet underwater at a wreck of a cargo vessel off the coast of Port Blair, living up to the Navy credo of ‘Shau Nau Varuna.’
Wreck diving can be extremely dangerous, and carries additional risk to life as the deteriorating vessel could collapse in a split-second. Driven by courage, however, the divers navigated through the treacherous and unfamiliar wreck in their quest to pay homage to the martyrs.
