Port Blair, Dec 16: The Headquarters 108 Mountain Brigade has started silver jubilee celebrations of its Raising Day. The Headquarters of 108 Brigade was raised on 15 Dec 1990 at Likabali in Arunachal Pradesh by Brig RS Mann, VSM. Within one year of raising, the entire Brigade had concentrated at Port Blair and underwent a series of exercises to familiarise itself with the Islands and the new operational role. The men worked round the clock and in a short span of time were fully operational. Since then, the 108 Mountain Brigade has been an integral part of the Defence apparatus of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It became the Army Component of the ANC on the latter’s raising in 2001.
After the devastating tsunami of Dec 26, 2015 the entire Brigade was deployed in ‘Operation Madad’ for rescue and relief operations and distributed 800 tons of relief material, reopened a road stretch of 39 km, provided medical assistance to 2500 people, evacuated 270 locals and assisted in restoration of communication and essential services. These efforts were hugely appreciated by the environment.
The 108 Mountain Brigade is commanded by Brigadier Amir Singh, VSM and is located at Brichgunj. On this historic day, the Brigade is celebrating its silver jubilee with great aplomb and a sense of pride and veneration.
As part of the celebrations, various programmes are being held on Dec 16, 2015. The celebrations were attended by various dignitaries, including its previous Commanders Lieutenant General AN Aul, PVSM, UYSM, VSM (Retd), Brigadier Jasjit Singh (Retd) and Brigadier Sanjay Thakur, YSM, SM. Brichgunj Military Station has also under taken a massive tree plantation drive wherein all personnel and their families have planted 5000 trees.
