Havelock, Aug 13: Havelock is said to be the face of Andaman tourism because every tourist visiting Andaman visiting Havelock is the first priority.
But sadly, because of total negligence the tourist hub Havelock Island is reeling under darkness for several hours every day. When this matter was reported to the Lieutenant Governor earlier, he had directed the Electricity Department to place an additional DG Set at Havelock Island, following which a 500 KW DG Set was sent to Havelock Island but surprisingly even after two months of shipping the DG set, it has not been installed.
According to reports, the existing DG sets at Havelock were purchased way back in the year 1962 and lacking maintenance, the sets develop frequent snags. Moreover, the vast territory of Havelock doesn’t have a single Senior Engineer and routine works are managed by just two Junior Engineers.
Under such circumstances, almost all areas of Havelock face power-cuts for at least 4-5 hours every day. “The power supply situation is in dismal state at Havelock. The region has been left devoid of attention by the top brass of the Power Department for decades.
The power outrage is also taking a toll on the tourism industry. Visitors desist from staying long at Havelock and many prefer to check out immediately after being put up with the power crisis. Locals too are haunted with frequent power-cuts and almost all commercial and agricultural activities are being affected. For a destination like Havelock, the administration needs to ensure round the clock power supply for promotion of tourism,” assert some residents.
