Port Blair, June 24: A function on the occasion of International day for YOGA was organized at the Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose auditorium of the RMRC (ICMR) on 21st June 2015 to highlight the benefits of this ancient tradition of the country for addressing various non-communicable and life style ailments.
The Chief Guest for the occasion was Dr Santosh Manne, Research Officer, Central Council for Research in Ayurveda & Siddha (CCRAS), Port Blair. Dr Manne in his keynote address entitled “Importance of YOGA in dealing with non-communicable diseases” dwelt on the genesis of YOGA and different schools of YOGA being practiced and finally laid emphasis on the most commonest form of YOGA i.e. Patanjali’s YOGA. Finally, he discussed the outcome of different ASANAS on different life style diseases. He exhorted the audience to adopt YOGA as a routine to the daily activities in order to bring about a holistic change in the life style of each individual in order to lead a healthy life.
Earlier welcoming the audience Dr P Vijayachari, Director of the Centre, informed that it was an important milestone for the country, that this ancient tradition has been recognized at global level, so much so that 21st June has been identified as International YOGA day.
A video film entitled “International day of YOGA- common protocol-a film by Morarji Desai National Institute of Yoga, Ministry of AYUSH, GOI was played for the audience. This was followed up with demonstration of ASANAS and concurrently YOGA ABHYAS (YOGA PRACTICE) was performed by volunteers. Overall about 65 people participated in the event which included residents in and around the Centre’s premises. A vote of thanks was proposed by Dr A N Shriram.
