Port Blair, June 07: The Andaman and Nicobar Command today said that it is conducting an internal inquiry to find out how a Mortar of India Army was found from the road of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
According to details on 1 June 2015 a live Mortar was found at Goal Ghar Junction of Port Blair city by a priest, triggering panic in city. The Mortar was later claimed by Andaman and Nicobar Command.
According to reports, a team of Army officers inspected the mortar and admitted that the mortar belong to Andaman & Nicobar Command, which probably fell from one of the Army trucks, while it was being transported from one location to the other.
“Yes the Ammunition belongs to ANC. There are set rules and standing operating procedure for handling of ammunitions and in this case if it has not been followed then necessary action will be taken,” the Public Relations Office of Andaman Nicobar Command, Col Yogesh Sharma told Andaman Sheekha today.
The PRO also refuted all rumours that the Mortar was stolen from Andaman Nicobar Command. “Certainly this Mortar was not stolen from ANC,” the PRO clarified.
Regarding blast at Brookshabad on 3rd June where a private truck with garbage from Defence Area had dumped garbage, the PRO said that soon after that accident the ANC had conducted check on the holdings of ammunitions in Andaman.
“We have carried out 100 percent check on our holdings of ammunitions and it has been found that no Ammunition is missing from ANC. Now an external agency is conducting inquiry and we are fully cooperating with the inquiry. ANC is also waiting for the outcome of the inquiry,” the PRO said.
