Port Blair, Mar 23: Outdated DG sets, lack of technical as well as senior staffs and maintenance issues has mainstay tourist destination, Havelock, to bear the brunt of power cuts this searing summer. Tourist activities are largely hit due to the long spells of power outrages and locals in almost all parts of Havelock are forced to put up with long hours of blackouts on a daily basis.
According to reports, the two DG sets at Havelock were purchased way back in the year 1962 and lacking maintenance, the sets develop frequent snags. Moreover, the vast territory of Havelock doesn’t have a single Senior Engineer and routine works are managed by just two Junior Engineers.
Under such circumstances, almost all areas of Havelock face power-cuts for at least 4-5 hours every day. The power supply situation is in dismal state at Havelock and there is no schedule of Power cut.
The region has been left devoid of attention by the top brass of the Power Department for decades.
“The power outrages are also taking a toll on the tourism industry. Visitors desist from staying long at Havelock and many prefer to check out immediately after being put up with the power crisis. Locals too are haunted with frequent power-cuts and almost all commercial and agricultural activities are being affected. “For a destination like Havelock, the administration needs to ensure round the clock power supply for promotion of tourism,” assert some residents.
