Port Blair, Feb 12: Division of Fisheries Science, ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair conducted “Fishermen Field Day” at Panighat and Junglighat in South Andaman under the INCOIS funded project on “Location-specific augmentation of Potential Fishing Zones (PFZ) using satellite altimetry and fishing ground database” for creating awareness on advantages of satellite based fishing technology, as per the directive of the Principal Investigator of project, Dr. S. Dam Roy, Director, CIARI, Port Blair. Altogether a total of 87 fishermen in South Andaman and 140 fishermen in Middle Andaman participated in the sensitization programme.
South Andaman: Fishermen field day was observed at Panighat fishermen shed and Junglighat Fisheries Training Hall on 19th and 31st January 2015 respectively. Smti. Rasheeda Bibi, Pradhan, Hope town, presided over the programme at Panighat. Shri. Sujanan, Superintendent of Fisheries and Shri. Sri Narayan, Dept. of Fisheries were present in the programme at Junglighat fish landing centre. Scientists, Mr. K Lohith Kumar, Mr. Anuraj, A and Tech. Officer Mr. Benny Varghese, from CIARI addressed the gathering and advised the fishermen to follow the PFZ forecasts for better catch. Mr. M. Kaliyamoorthy & Mr. Titus Immanuel, Research Associates highlighted the benefits of PFZ forecasts for improved catch per unit effort and reducing the scouting time along with usage of GPS and sensitized fishermen on responsible fishing and sea safety.
Middle Andaman: Fishermen field day was held at Rangat Bay, Betapur-RRO, Baratang & Kadamtala on 4th , 5th and 6th February 2015 respectively in Middle Andaman. Mr. Kaliyamoorthi, Research Associate and Mr. G. Narshimulu SRF organized the programme and suggested the fishermen to take up the fishing as a profession in an active manner. Fishermen were urged to follow the PFZ advisories and the benefits of the satellite based technology were explained. Mr. Moideen and Mr. Sunil Koshi, Dept. fisheries were also present in the programme.
