Mayabunder, Dec 01: The people of Mayabunder allege that the major places of Mayabunder like back yard of fisheries colony, Bazar,Panchayat market, GMSSSMayabunder has transformed into a major dumping yard.
The place now smells horrible, the people of the area are facing severe problems as they are compelled to breathe that reek during strong wind. Not only this, people can be seen responding to nature’s call by sitting in open areas.
Mayabunder is said to be the District Headquarter of North and Middle Andaman region and if this is the situation of District Headquarter one can imagine what would be the standard of cleanliness in other part of North and Middle Andaman.
Nearly six months back the Lt. Governor while visiting Mayabunder had directed the authorities to keep Mayabunder area clean after finding an area of Mayabunder bombarded with garbage dump. Sadly even after Lt. Governor’s direction things haven’t changed much in Mayabunder.
“Authorities must declare a particular place for dumping garbages and must conduct more awareness programmes among the villagers to keep the surroundings clean and hygienic,” said a senior citizen.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha, a villager said that the authorities concerned must implement the Swachh Bharat Mission announced by the Prime Minister in an effective way so that the villagers residing in the locality can live in a better and clean environment.
