Mayabunder, Nov 02: Mahatma Gandhi Govt. College, Mayabunder is the only rural College in the A & N Islands situated at Karmatang, Mayabunder and is the premier institute of higher education comprising of 1000 students, 300 members of staff and their family members.
A small exchange located in the boy’s hostel with micro antennae for cellular service was provided to the college and there are about 3500 users consisting college students/ staff as well as family members which includes nearby Rampur and Karmatang locality.
It is reported that the College authority was voluntarily provided the land for establishment of Signal Tower in the college premises for cellular service. The authority informed to our reporter that the trouble started from amidst of 2012 and every alternative day either the exchange or the cellular service was defunct which causes a great hardship for the college accommodating about 600 hostellers both boys and girls and around 300 staff because of its location in an isolated place about 10 kms away from Mayabunder.
Due to lack of communication, sometimes great tragedy such as severe sickness, emergency is not attended properly. Besides, one of the most important causes which threaten the credibility of the college is that the college is under Pondicherry University and Pondicherry University has introduced online admission and examinations.
Due to the failure of the services students face great difficulty in filling of the forms in time and getting their result. Even college authority is under great pressure as some time they are unable to communicate with Administration through fax or mail or phone as mostly all remain defunct for more than 15 days in a month.
The crisis has deepened since 02 weeks and since last 03 days there is no communication link to this college. The matter was also brought to the concerned authority several occasions but all are in vain. Hope the Administration will intervene into this matter and do something for the safety and convenience of the people living in Karmatang area.
