Port Blair, Oct 16: In honour of foundation day of Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations “World Food Day” is celebrated every year throughout the world on 16th October. The theme for this year is “Family Farmers- Feeding the world, caring the earth”. To mark the occasion a programme was organized by the Department of Agriculture, Diglipur in association with Union Territory Agricultural Technology Management Agency (UTATMA) in the Conference hall of GPOA building, Diglipur at 10:00 AM.
Shri.Gourango Dutta, Pramukh, Panchayat Samiti, Diglipur graced the occasion as Chief Guest and Shri. Singaram, Pradhan, Subashgram Gram Panchayat as guest of honour.
At the outset, Smt Sreedevi Assistant Director (Agri.), Diglipur welcomed the gathering and dwelt at length about the importance of ‘World Food Day’. She elaborated the theme for this year, and has informed the gathering that the United Nations has declared 2014 as “International year of Family Farming” and explained about the contribution of family farming towards production, employment, food security, bio-diversity, the economy of the nation especially in case of our country where agriculture is still managed by the family farmers.
Smt V. Sheeja, Assistant Fisheries Development Officer, Diglipur has motivated the farmers for adopting sustainable agriculture including fisheries and to go for eco-friendly environment for healthy life.
Shri. P.R. Singaram, Pradhan, Subashgram Gram Panchayat emphasized the importance of World Food Day and exhorted the farmers to grow the crops organically involving the family members.
The Chief guest of the function Shri. Gourango Dutta, Pramukh, Panchayat Samiti, Diglipur urged the farmers to adopt Integrated farming system and urged the youths to take up farming as their occupation.
To mark the occasion the day memorable a “Quiz Competition” was conducted by involving Fisheries and Animal Husbandary Departments.
Altoghter 35 farmers and farmer friends actively participated and they were given prizes. To make the programme more effective a documentation film on “Organic farming” was shown to the gathering. The programme concluded with vote of thanks proposed by Shri Satinder Prasad, AFA.
