Diglipur, June 27: A team of Fisheries Department headed by AFDO, Dr.Sailesh Kumar seized about 3200 number of live fresh water fish seeds from Diglipur area from three persons. The seized fishes were of Rupchandra, Pangasius, Catla and Rohu Fry variety.
As per rules no person can distribute or sell live fish seeds, which are bought to these Islands from Mainland India without the permission or approval of the Fisheries Department, as those seeds may carry infections and may contaminate local fishes.
But this business of selling live fresh water fish seed to farmers of North and Middle Andaman, is believed to be thriving since last many years in the region.
On information the Asst. Commissioner, Dr. Vivek Kumar also reached the spot and asked the officials to act as per rules. Later the fish seeds were disposed off as per rules.
“Whoever doing live fresh water fish seed business without obtaining the permission of the Fisheries Department will be dealt as per rules,” the AFDO Dr. Sailesh Kumar told Andaman Sheekha at Diglipur.
