Billyground, Middle Andaman, Oct 09: Heavy Rainfall since yesterday, due to cyclonic weather has disrupted normal life in Andaman and Nicobar Islands, the Middle Andaman region is worst hit.
Incessant rain resulted in floods in many parts of Middle Andaman leaving hundreds of people stranded in various pockets and forcing dozens and dozens of people to run away from home. Heavy rainfall also caused power cut in the entire Middle Andaman Region.
“At Swadesh Nagar, nearly 200 students, including 95 girls and 35 teaching staffs were stranded at Swadesh Nagar School last night. Due to flooding they were unable to come out. Though many students were later brought out but nearly 40 Children and 15 teaching staffs are still inside the school. Some stranded passengers of Andaman Trunk Road (ATR) also took shelter in the school,” the Assistant Commissioner of Rangat, Middle Andaman told ‘Andaman Sheekha’ this afternoon.
According to reports nearly 80 students and ATR passengers are stranded in Government Sec School CFO Nallah since yesterday because of heavy rain.
The Harinagar Panchayat and various parts of Middle Andaman viz Billyground, Betapur and Rangat are facing flood like situation, many houses are already under water.
Meanwhile Andaman and Nicobar Administration has Local cautionary signal No.III hoisted at Port Blair and all the buses of Andaman Trunk Road have been cancelled. Flooding has inundated various parts of Andaman Trunk Road.
Meanwhile, nearly 45 tourists visiting Andaman and Nicobar Islands, remained stranded at Harinagar area of Middle Andaman. They have taken Shelter in Harinagar village and have been served food by villagers and Administration.
A couple of flights to mainland have already been cancelled.
Today a 54 year old villager of Mithla village of Rangat was rescued to Police team and Vilagers, after he was washed away by heavy flow of water. Police teams in small boats recued many stranded people from Rangat area of Middle Andaman but in Billyground region of Middle Andaman no boat has come for rescue yet.
On Tuesday, Jet Konnect flight from Chennai to Port Blair with 163 passengers on board made an unscheduled landing at Bangkok airport instead of Port Blair before returning to Chennai, thereby making the passengers stay onboard for more than nine hours. The plane was diverted to Bangkok. After refueling, the aircraft left Bangkok at 4.30 pm and reached Chennai around 7.30 pm.
According to sources 19 fishermen still stranded near Japan Tickery, Diglipur since yesterday, the District Administration could not still launch a rescue operation.
Meanwhile, in his recent tweet the Lt. Governor of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, Mr. A K Singh has said that all the agencies of Disaster Control are put on alert.
“Heavy rain has disrupted life in these Islands. All the agencies have been put on alert, stranded people are being rescued and provided relief,” A K Singh Tweeted.
