Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept 24: The General Public of Wimberly Gung witnessed the inaugural ceremony of “Wildlife Week Cup” Knockout Football Tournament at its Mini Stadium on 24.09.2026. The event was inaugurated by Dr. S Dinesh Kannan, IFS, Chief Conservator of Forests (Wildlife & Territorial) in presence of Dr. Rahul, Incharge Medical Officer, Health & Wellness Centre, Wimberly Gunj, Mr. Ajit V John, Director, Forest Training Institute, Wimberly Gunj, Mr. V.K. Abdul Aziz, Zilla Parishad Member, Kanyapuram-Brindaban, Mr. A. Ummer, Zilla Parishad Member, Wimberly Gunj-Stewart Gunj, Mr. P. Abdul Basheer, Pradhan, GP Kanyapuram, Mr. Ram Babu, Pradhan, GP Wimberly Gunj and Mr. R.S Sharath, ACF, South Andaman.
The tournament has been organized under the aegis of South Andaman Forest Division as a run upto the celebration of the 72nd Wildlife Week under the theme “Connecting Habitats, Thriving Wildlife”. A total of 22 teams is participating in the tournament.
The Chief Guest highlighted that the South Andaman Forest Department has organized the football tournament to spread the message “TEAM UP FOR WILDLIFE” to use the popularity and spirit of football as a platform to connect with youth and community at large to spread the message that protection of the wildlife and natural heritage is a responsibility shared by all.
The inaugural match was played between Stewart Gunj team and King Makers Team in which King Makers Team won the match by 3-1.
