Sri Vijaya Puram, Sept 17: The Department of Animal Husbandry & Veterinary Services (AH&VS) organised an Awareness Training on Pig Farming under the National Livestock Mission in the form of a Pig Farmers’ Field School (FFS) at the Piggery Unit of Mr. Erick Nathaniel, Harminder Bay.
A total of 25 participants, most of whom keep pigs as an important livestock of the household, enthusiastically attended the programme. Mr. Joseph, 2nd Captain, graced the occasion as Chief Guest and requested the participants to give patient hearing and attention to the training. Mr. Festus, Ex-Secretary, Tribal Council, attended as Guest of Honour and urged the tribal farmers to adopt scientific pig farming techniques with proper hygiene to obtain maximum production benefit.
During the programme, the participants were imparted general know-how on pig farming by introducing scientific methods of rearing for improved pork production, with reference to popularising value-added products such as bacon, ham and sausage for higher returns. Inputs including plastic gumla and refreshments were distributed to the participants.
During the interactive session, the farmers put forth demands for piglets, goat kids, ducks and poultry birds and registered their names accordingly. The Department of AH&VS remains committed to organising Farmers’ Field Schools and capacity-building programmes under NLM to promote scientific pig farming among tribal and rural communities in the Islands, a press release from Dept. of AH&VS said.
