Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug. 23: Residents of Madupur Panchayat, North Andaman have raised concerns over the deteriorating condition of roads in the area, particularly a road located alongside the Kalpong River in Ward No. 3, where repeated landslides have severely affected public movement and vehicular connectivity.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha Mr. Shribash Chandra Das, the Zilla Parishad Member of Madhupur and ex-Adhyaksh of North and Middle Andaman Zilla Parishad said that the road near D.B. Gram was badly affected during last year’s heavy rainfall and flooding, when a landslide brought the eroded portion dangerously close to the road. The issue was reportedly highlighted several times through the media and complaints, and the affected location was also brought to the attention of the concerned administration officials during a site visit.
Mr. Das said that following the complaints, the Andaman Public Works Department (PWD) had already prepared and submitted an estimate for the construction of a gabion wall to protect the vulnerable stretch. However, the proposed work is yet to be tendered and is reportedly pending at the concerned office.
He said that the situation has worsened further this year following additional rainfall and water flow, resulting in more sliding along the road. The deteriorated stretch has now made public movement extremely difficult, while vehicles are reportedly unable to pass through the affected portion.
Local residents have requested the administration to undertake temporary repairs immediately to restore basic connectivity. The affected road is reportedly used by schoolchildren, patients and other residents, making its restoration particularly important for the local community.
