
Sri Vijaya Puram, Aug. 14: The 80th Independence Day will be celebrated in a befitting manner in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands along with the rest of the country today, with the main function scheduled to be held at the historic Netaji Stadium.
The Lt. Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands and Vice Chairman of the Islands Development Agency, Admiral D. K. Joshi, PVSM, AVSM, YSM, NM, VSM (Retd.), will hoist the National Tricolour at 9.19 AM at Netaji Stadium. The programme will be followed by the presentation of medals, gallantry awards and commendation certificates. The Lt. Governor will thereafter address the gathering, following which the main function will conclude with the National Anthem.
Before arriving at Netaji Stadium for the main function, the Lt. Governor will visit the National Memorial Cellular Jail. He will place a wreath at the ‘Martyr’s Column’ as a mark of respect to the freedom fighters who sacrificed their lives for the nation. He will also hoist the National Flag at the historic Cellular Jail.
As part of the preparations for the national celebration, prominent locations across the city have also received a facelift. Historical monuments and Government buildings have been whitewashed and given a renewed appearance ahead of Independence Day.
Elaborate traffic arrangements and traffic diversions have also been put in place in Sri Vijaya Puram to ensure the smooth conduct of the main Independence Day function and facilitate the movement of the public and participating contingents.
The celebrations will be held with the participation of various departments, security personnel and other stakeholders, as the Islands join the rest of the country in marking the 80th Independence Day.
