Sri Vijaya Puram, Apr 23: Mr. N. K. Udhaya Kumar, State General Secretary (Organisation), Hindu Rashtra Shakti, has urged the Andaman & Nicobar Administration to implement a camera-based overspeed challan system across the Union Territory to enhance road safety.
In a representation addressed to the Lieutenant Governor, Chief Secretary, and Deputy Commissioner (South Andaman), he highlighted a recent tragic incident near Sri Vijaya Puram, where a volunteer lost his life after being hit by an unidentified speeding vehicle. He stated that the incident reflects serious gaps in traffic enforcement and the growing threat of overspeeding and negligent driving.
He pointed out that accident-prone zones, national highways, tourist areas, seashore regions, and areas around public gathering places such as DJ venues, bars, spa centres, religious places, playgrounds, and educational institutions witness heavy pedestrian movement, making them highly vulnerable.
Emphasizing the need for immediate action, Mr. Udhaya Kumar proposed the installation of automated speed detection cameras integrated with an e-challan system under the Motor Vehicles Act, 1988. He noted that such a system would act as a deterrent against traffic violations, reduce dependence on manual enforcement, and improve compliance with traffic rules.
He further suggested that the system be strategically deployed across sensitive and high-risk locations to ensure continuous monitoring and accountability of vehicle operators.
Stressing that repeated loss of lives due to reckless driving is preventable, he urged the Administration to take prompt steps to strengthen road safety infrastructure and ensure the safety of residents and visitors in the Islands.
