Sri Vijaya Puram, Mar 06: The Chairman of the Campaign Committee of Andaman & Nicobar Territorial Congress Committee (ANTCC), Mr. G. Bhasker, has expressed serious concern over the deteriorating condition of key tourism infrastructure in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands and has urged the Administration to take immediate corrective measures.
In a representation addressed to the Chief Secretary of the Andaman & Nicobar Administration, Mr. Bhasker highlighted the declining condition of Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose Island (formerly Ross Island), one of the most prominent tourist attractions in the Islands. He stated that when the Island was earlier maintained by the defence authorities, it was kept in a much better and organized condition. However, the present upkeep appears neglected and unsatisfactory, raising concerns about the overall management of the site.
He further pointed out that garbage clearance on the Island is not being carried out regularly, resulting in an unpleasant environment for visitors. According to Mr. Bhasker, the current management of the Island appears unplanned and lacking proper maintenance.
Emphasizing that tourism is the backbone of the economy of the Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Mr. Bhasker stated that such neglect may adversely affect the reputation of the Islands among domestic as well as international tourists.
The Congress leader also drew attention to the poor and unhygienic condition of toilets at Jirkatang Check Post, Middle Strait Jetty, and Nilambur Jetty. These facilities, though functioning as pay-and-use toilets, are reportedly in very bad condition and require urgent repair and regular maintenance. Tourists and local passengers traveling along these routes are facing considerable inconvenience due to the poor sanitation facilities.
Mr. Bhasker also noted that several beaches across the Islands require regular cleaning and proper waste management systems to maintain cleanliness and environmental standards.
He urged the Chief Secretary to direct the concerned departments to take immediate remedial measures and ensure proper maintenance of all tourism infrastructure in the larger public interest.
Mr. Bhasker emphasized that timely action is essential to protect the image of the Islands as a premier tourist destination and to safeguard the tourism-based economy of the region.
