Sri Vijaya Puram, 09 Feb: A large group of college students gathered infront of JNRM this morning raising strong slogans and voicing their demand for the establishment of a Central University in the Andaman & Nicobar Islands. The protest, marked by chants of “We Want Central University,” “We want Pondicherry University” reflected growing frustration among the youth regarding higher education opportunities in the Islands. Students stated that they were not seeking favors but demanding what they described as their legitimate right to quality and accessible education within their own region.
The demonstration witnessed energetic participation from students of multiple colleges who emphasized that the movement was not limited to a single institution but represented the collective voice of the entire student community. Organizers announced that classes would be boycotted the tomorrow and on 11 February 2026 protest has been scheduled infornt of TGCE at 7:30 AM, urging all students to gather peacefully and maintain discipline. Student leaders stressed that the agitation would remain lawful and non-violent, requesting participants to avoid unauthorized meetings or misinformation on social media platforms.
Speakers appealed to the administration to consider the long-term academic future of local youth and initiate concrete steps toward establishing a central university. Several parents were also reported to have extended support, calling the demand genuine and necessary for regional development.
Representatives from local unions, including members of the auto drivers’ association, extended solidarity, describing the students as the future strength of the Islands. They advised maintaining unity and following lawful procedures while interacting with officials. The protest concluded with the singing of the National Anthem and a collective assurance that the movement would continue peacefully until their voices are heard. Students also thanked the police, administration, and media for ensuring a calm environment and helping bring attention to their concerns. The coming days are expected to be crucial as authorities monitor the situation and further discussions are anticipated.
