Sri Vijaya Puram, Feb 05: A road accident involving a passenger bus and a truck was reported this afternoon in North Andaman, resulting in minor injuries to two women passengers and significant damage to the bus. The incident occurred while the bus was en route from Sri Vijayapuram to Diglipur via Mayabunder.
According to available information, the bus bearing registration number AN01 M 6970 was being driven by Anand Ekka (35 years), a resident of Sreenagar, Kalighat, who is employed as a professional driver. The journey commenced in the early morning hours, and after reaching Mayabunder, the vehicle proceeded towards Diglipur. At approximately 1:30 PM, after crossing Panighat Bridge and moving nearly 1.5 kilometers ahead near Austin II, the accident took place.
Reports state that a private truck, bearing registration number AN01 Q 8642, approached from the opposite direction at a reportedly high speed. Despite the bus driver slowing down the vehicle and steering it towards the extreme left side of the road in an attempt to avoid a collision, the rear portion of the oncoming truck allegedly struck the right-side rear mirror of the bus. The sudden impact caused the bus to veer further left, leading to the complete shattering of the main front glass of the bus.
At the time of the incident, 23 passengers were travelling in the bus. Fortunately, no serious casualties were reported; however, two women passengers sustained minor injuries and were provided necessary medical attention. The swift response of the driver in attempting to control the vehicle is believed to have prevented a more severe mishap.
Preliminary details suggest that the accident occurred due to the alleged high speed of the truck. The truck driver has been identified as Nemash Minj (29 years), a private driver and resident of Navin Nagar. A request for appropriate legal action against the truck driver has been made.
Authorities are expected to examine the circumstances surrounding the incident and take further action as per law. The accident once again highlights concerns regarding speed control and road safety on inter-island routes in the Andaman region.
