
Sri Vijaya Puram, Oct 01: Trade Union International of Pensioners and Retirees attached to the World Federation of Trade Unions, observed 1st October, 2025 as World Pensioners Day throughout the world. In India too, at the call given by the National Coordination Committee of Pensioners Associations, New Delhi, World Pensioners Day was observed by Pensioners Associations/Unions throughout the country.
In Andaman & Nicobar Islands, the Government Pensioners Association, Andaman & Nicobar Islands organised a small and simple function at Shaheed Bhavan, Anarkali, Port Blair to mark the occasion. Mr. KP Jayarajan, retired Executive Engineer, APWD was the Chief Guest on the occasion. Addressing the participants in the programme, he expressed happiness that the Govt Pensioners Association has observed the World Pensioners Day in the islands.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Banerjee, Vice President, Govt. Pensioners Association briefly outlined the difficulties being faced by the elderly people in the islands for medical treatment. He said that the prices of medicines are increasing without any control and the Government is supporting the medical mafia in the country who loot the innocent people especially the aged persons. Adulteration of food items sold in the market and competitive medicine tariffs by greedy drug companies, with the blessings of the government, are adversely affecting the people especially the aged.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr.D. Ayyappan, former General Secretary of Non-Gazetted Govt. Officers Association briefly dealt with various problems confronted by the pensioners in the country in general and those in Andaman & Nicobar Islands in particular. Suresh Lall, General Secretary, Govt Pensioners Association proposed vote of thanks.
