Port Blair, Mar 24: People of Andaman & Nicobar Islands are all set to witness a neck to neck contest as the Indian National Congress on Friday night declared Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma, the sitting Member of Parliament of these Islands, as their candidate for Andaman and Nicobar Constituency for the upcoming Lok Sabha election in 2024.
With Mr. Sharma is slated to arrive in Port Blair tomorrow after securing the party ticket, anticipation runs high among the islanders and his supporters, who are anxiously waiting to receive him.
Having previously clinched the Lok Sabha seat in the 2019 general election during strong Modi wave, Mr. Sharma is known to have built strong one to one bonds with Islanders beyond party lines, which is his actual strength. Sources indicate that Mr. Sharma is expected to formally submit his nomination papers in the next few days.
The electoral arena promises to be heated with Mr. B.P. Ray, former Member of Parliament, contested from the BJP ticket, setting the stage for an intriguing showdown. Silence of Mr. B.P. Ray in the last five years and his on record statements against job reservations seems to pose big hurdles for him in this election.
While Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma has increased his voters by 10,000 to 15,000 when he was not in power, in the last five years (in power) many believe that number will be more than double. On the other side Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray has vast experience of reaching out to the public by constantly remaining in news and media reports.
While Mr. Bishnu Pada Ray has advantage of Modi support in Andaman, Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma has proved his worth by securing prestigious SansadRatna Award thrice consecutively. As the election unfolds, all eyes are on the Islands to witness who will emerge victorious and capture the hearts of its people.
