With only two helicopters in operation, residents, especially those living in remote islands, encountered difficulties in accessing essential services. Earlier, one helicopter was sent to Maharashtra for major repairs, while the other underwent routine maintenance in Port Blair, exacerbating the problem.
However, the situation is set to improve as third helicopters are already operational in Port Blair, with efforts underway to arrange for pilots for the fourth remaining helicopter.
Speaking to Andaman Shikha, the Director of Civil Aviation, Dr. Jatinder Sohal, DANICS, today said that concerted efforts are being made to expedite the operationalization of all four helicopters to serve the islanders effectively.
The availability of four helicopters will be a game-changer for the people of Andaman and Nicobar Islands, particularly in medical emergencies. These helicopters operated by Administration with technical support of Pawan Hans, have played a crucial role in transporting patients swiftly to medical facilities. With four helicopters in service, the accessibility of medical assistance will significantly improve, providing much-needed relief to residents. Moreover, the enhanced helicopter services will facilitate easier travel for islanders to both the southernmost and northernmost islands of Andaman and Nicobar Islands.
