Port Blair, Feb 06: The Parliamentary Committee on Rural Development lead by Smti Sumitra Mahajan visited Car Nicobar today. Immediately on arriving, the team proceeded to the Conference hall of the Emergency Operation Centre at District Office. The Deputy Commissioner of the District Shri P. Jawahar explained them about the various developmental activities being carried out under different schemes like MGNREGA,SGSY and MPLAD, through impressive power point presentation.
The Members of the visiting team interacted with the leaders of the Tribal Council, present in the conference. The Tribal leaders highlighted their demands before the team and requested to solve them on priority, as the people are suffering a lot. They submitted the memorandum highlighting the urgent need to construct retaining Sea wall at Mus Jetty, increasing the capacity of the Petrol Pump, Construction of Road at some locations and to provide regular Ship services to the people of Car Nicobar.
The Committee then visited the Community Village Garden, being developed under MGNREGA at Tamaloo Village. The members got impressed with the project started under the coconut & Vegetable mission in august last year by the Lt. Governor. More than 1200 Man days have been generated through the Project so far.
After visiting the vegetable garden the Parliamentary committee went to the Tsunami Memorial at Jayanti and paid their tributes to the departed souls. The Member of the Parliament from the Islands Shri BIshnu Pada Ray and the Secretary Rural Development Shri D.N. Singh also accompanied the committee. The team returned to Port Blair in the afternoon. Before coming to Car Nicobar the committee had visited Hutbay today.
