Port Blair, Oct 19: The ANTCC Campaign Committee Chairman Mr. TSG Bhasker has taken up an important issue with the Deputy Commisioner, South Andaman regarding the closure of Quarries in South Andaman District.
In a letter addressed to the DC South Andaman, Mr. Bhasker said that the quarries have been closed for around 1 year due to which several developmental works have been severely affected.
“The PBMC and APWD have been crippled because of this and works of multiple crores are pending because of the need of Quarry materials”, added Mr. Bhasker.
He further pointed out that the environmental clearance needed for reopening of Quarries is taking almost a year which is very shocking and unreasonable. The Central Government needs to sensitize this matter and provide immediate environmental clearance.
He highlighted that the poor labourers working in the quarries and with contractors are the worst suffers of this issue as they are rarely getting any employment and are unable to sustain their lives.
“The closure of quarries has also caused a cascading effect on the economy of A&N Islands and the Administration is solely responsible for this situation”, criticized Mr. Bhasker.
Hence, he requested the Deputy Commissioner to view this matter very seriously and immediately do the needful so that the economy of A&N Islands can be revived.
