Port Blair, Feb 26: The Department of Home Science, JNRM, in association with the National Institute of Social Defence (NISD), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Govt. of India organized a One day Awareness Programme on Drug Abuse Prevention and “NUKKAD NATAK” for Community in Tushnabad Gram Panchayat on 25th February 2023. The Chief Guest Mr. Rajender Lal, BDO & Executive Magistrate, Ferrargunj inaugurated the programme and while addressing the gathering appreciated the Department of Home Science, JNRM for taking initiative to organize this programme in Tushnabad Gram Panchayat. He urged the participants to enhance their level of understanding on various drugs and its ill effects to the society and family. Apart from individual health issues, drug abuse and addiction will spoil the family as a whole, he added. The rural women who are attending the programme should in turn empower the community and youth to say No to drugs, he said. The Guest of Honour Mr. Anand Amrit Raj, Pradhan, Tushnabad Gram Panchayat requested the SHG members, youths and youngsters to be aware and help others to keep away from drugs. The Panchayat is providing various opportunities for the youngsters to have overall development by tapping their potential in a positive way through sports, he added.
Dr. H.K.Sharma, Principal, JNRM congratulated the Tushnabad Gram Panchayat team and Home Science, JNRM for taking the drug abuse prevention extension activities in the UBA adopted village. Dr. K. Venkatesan, HOD, Home Science and Convener of this programme highlighted the role of gram panchayats in achieving “Nasha Mukt Bharat” and the panchayats can a act as a nodal center at the village level to provide counseling to the needy in collaboration with the line departments. Dr D. Ambedkar, Medical Officer, PHC, Tushnabad discussed the audience on the health related complications through drug abuse. Further he has highlighted the misuse of various painkillers & sedatives which are meant for medical purposes. Mrs. Arti, Sub Inspector, Orgabraj PS asked the community to join hands with the police department in order to have a drug free society. Dr. Rekha Kumari, Resource Person, Department of Home Science spoke on withdrawal symptoms during rehabilitation and the importance of counseling psychotherapy at household level.
Mr. Jagdish Prasad, ASI, Ograbraj PS also spoke on the occasion. Mr. Salamat Ali, Samity Member, Mr. .Rajesh Mondal, Up-Pradhan, Mrs.Geetanjali, Sarpanch, PRI Members, Mr. Jeeven Masi Minj, Mr. Srikant, Mrs. Saida, Mrs. Rajkumari, Mr. Harman Kullu, and Mrs. Nagavalli also took part in the programme along with the local youth, SHG women, and Auto drivers. Earlier the students of B.Sc Home Science performed “Nukkad Natak ” on drug abuse prevention in Tushnabad Junction and Market area which was witnessed by the general public. Mrs. Poonam Singh, Resource Person, Department of Home Science welcomed the gathering.
