Port Blair, Oct 13: A major fire incident was reported this morning in APWDBitumen storage point,behind ITF Ground near Helipad.
According to reports, a fewworkers of APWD were heatingBitumen for road construction works and while heating bitumen in Drum, suddenlythey observed huge flames coming out from one drum.
An APWD worker reportedly poured water to control the fire but the fire spread to other Bitumen drums, kept nearby.
According to reports, immediately at around 08.30AM information was given to the Fire Control Room. Meanwhile, seeing huge smoke coming INS Utkrosh fire tender anddefense personnel also reached the spot because the place is a sensitive defense zone and is very close to Airport Runway and Helipad.
Further one fire tender and one water bowser from Fire Station Headquarter Aberdeen reached the spot and within 35 minutes around 09.05 AMthe fire was brought under control.
The cause of Fire is said to be overheating of Bitumen. Thankfully no one was injured in the accident.
