Port Blair, Apr 05: The National Maritime day is celebrated every year on 05th April in commemoration of the maiden voyage of the first Indian vessel “SS Loyality” owned by M/s Scindia Steam Navigation Company, from Mumbai to London 05th April 1919. This day is observed to acknowledge and recognize the significance of Maritime Industry. The 59th National Maritime Day was celebrated in these Islands alongwith entire nation, yesterday on 05th April 2022.
Although there is remarkable improvement in COVID situation in these Islands, however the National Maritime Day Celebration Committee, A&N Islands, avoiding complacency, has decided to observe this year National Maritime Day on a Low Key Scale and only customary functions were observed.
As part of the Celebrations, the Maritime Committee laid a wreath at Capt Beals Grave at 0630 Hrs and conducted a small prayer service. Thereafter Flag at Choulanga Jetty was Hoisted. As part of celebrations, sweets and refreshments were also distributed to attendees during the Flag Hoisting Ceremony at Marine Dockyard.
On this solemn occasion, the Hon’ble Lt Governor, A&N Islands had also greeted the entire Maritime fraternity of these Islands and acknowledged the significant role played by them during the unprecedented COVID situation.
To mark the National Maritime Day, the vessels of Directorate of Shipping Services were also dressed overall.
