Port Blair, Nov 27: In bid to eradicate use and abuse of drugs among school and college children, ISMAT, a women’s initiative has launched a Drug awareness campaign. The first phase of the campaign was a “Survey on Drug abuse” among the students of XI, XII and Undergraduates. As a part of the 2nd Phase of the campaign, inter college Poster Making, Collage Making and Elocution Competitions were organized on the theme of ‘Use and Abuse of Drugs’. The competitions were conducted in JNRM Campus on Nov 20. The event registered enthusiastic participation of around 50 students of ANCOL, Andaman Law College, JNRM and TGCE. Dr Hemant Kumar Sharma, Principal, JNRM was the chief guest on the occasion. Ms. Shahnaz Jadwet, Ex-President, ISMAT welcomed the chief guest with a plant and Dr. Shirin Jadwet, President ISMAT delivered the welcome address.
Dr Mitesh Behari, Consultant Neuro-Psychiatrist & De-Addiction Specialist, from the Health 4 U Multi-Specialty Clinic spoke on “Drug Abuse, its repercussions on the youth of these islands “. The session was interactive and informative. Dr. Mitesh emphasized on the fact that drug addiction is a disease. The longer the addiction the longer it takes to cure, he said stressing on the importance of creating awareness among the youth to curb the growing menace. The chief guest and Dr Venkatesh, HOD , JNRM also encouraged the students to say no to drugs and stop others from taking it. The winners of the competitions held were:
