Port Blair, Nov 08: The Coast Guard Region (A&N), as part of Coastal Security Initiative, conducted the Mass Awareness Drive at Mayabunder & Rangat and Community Interaction Programme with Fishing Community at 11 places across the Island during 06-08 Nov 12. Total 500 people attended the Mass Awareness Drive and Community Interaction Programme organized at Mayabunder, Kalighat, Hut Bay, Campbell Bay, Neil, Havelock, Sippighat, Junglighat, Guptapara, Kishori Nagar and Nimbu Thala in coordination with District Administration and Gram Pramukhs. .
The Mass Awarness Drive and Interaction programme was attended by Ms. Sakshi Mittal, IAS, Assistant District Collector, Mayabunder, Sri Prem Kumar, Gram Pramukh Rangat, Sri Vishwa Kannan, IFS, DFO Rangat, Sri Sajan Paul, DFO Baratang, Panchayat Pradhans of Rangat, Dashrathpur, Nimbuthala, Sabri and Urmilapur, representatives of ALHW, IB, CID, PMB, BSNL, electricity, education department and the owners of Hotel & Lodges and Transporters.
The Mass Awareness Drive and Community interaction programme was conducted to spread awareness and re-emphasize the responsibility of Fishing Community towards the Coastal Security setup and their role as “Eyes and Ears” of the security agencies in run up to prepare for Coastal Security Exercise ‘Tat-Suraksha” TSX – 02/12 during 21-23 Nov 12. The opportunity was also utilized to educate fishermen on safety and security aspects while operating at Sea. The importance of toll free SAR No. 1554 and Coastal Security No. 1093 was also highlighted.
In the past also similar programmes were conducted across the Islands during 26-28 Sep 12 and 13-16 Oct 12 which was attended by 250 and 310 fishermen respectively. A communiqué received from Commandant SSN Bajpai, Chief Staff Officer (Operations) of Coast Guard Region (A&N).
