Port Blair, Sept 26: In an yet another unexpected accident at Middle Andaman’s Thoratang Bridge construction site, today belts of two heavy lifting cranes snapped while placing the first out of 12 Girders of the under construction bridge.
Luckily no one was injured during the accident and the Girder is also intact, which will probably be salvaged tomorrow and be placed again, as per plan.
As per a video, which went viral in social media, it seems that the belts of both the cranes snapped after one of the cranes lost balance, however, we are waiting for an official comment.
Earlier, in 2019, after collapse of Bailey bridge over Thorantang, twice, the NHIDCL contractors had constructed a RCC Hume Pipe Culvert over Thoratang Nallah. Now the works for a permanent bridge is going on at the site, it is learnt.
As per detail, placing Girder is always a risky task and it is reported that it will take around five days to complete the work of placing all the Girders of the bridge.
