Port Blair, Aug 12: The Indian Coast Guard conducted Special Community Interaction programs to commemorate the 75th Independence day celebrations ’Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’. As part of the event, Coast Guard Units at Port Blair and other remote locations in the Isles including Mayabunder and Campbell Bay reached out to local populace alongwith representatives from fisheries department on 10 Aug 21 and 11 Aug 21. The fishermen were made aware about search and rescue set up in India, especially at A&N Islands and were explained various precautionary measures to be followed while venturing out for fishing. The fishermen were also educated on effective usage of SAR toll free number 1554. Theoretical briefing was followed by practical demonstration on carriage and usage of Safety equipment onboard boat.
As a part of information campaign, fisherman community were also given live demonstration on procedure for usage of life saving appliances such as Distress Alert Transponders, life jackets etc. In addition, a medical lecture was also imparted to augment basic knowledge on First Aid. To promote the concept of fishermen being developed as eyes and ears for security agencies, the fisherfolk were appraised to report all suspicious activity or vessel. The fishermen were subsequently gifted life jackets by ICG Team. The campaign also highlighted India’s global achievements and importance of GoI flagship programmes like Swachh Bharat abhiyan, Swachh Sagar Abhiyan etc.
