Port Blair Aug 03: The Indian Coast Guard organised a Walkathon followed by Beach cleanship at the Marina Park on 03 Aug 21. The event was a part of Government of India’s initiative ‘AZADI KA AMRIT MAHOTSAV’ to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of independence of a progressive India and history of its people, culture and achievements. The Walkathon was aimed to promote unity among citizens of India despite diversity and cleanup drive was organized to spread awareness about ‘Swachh Bharat Abhiyan’ and Single Use Plastic’.
The Walkathon was flagged off by the Chief Guest, Deputy Inspector General Narendra Singh, TM, Chief of Staff, Coast Guard Regional Headquarters (A & N) at Tatrakshak Vihar, Haddo. 100 ICG personnel took part and symbolized the ‘Ek Bharat Shresth Bharat’ theme emphasizing unity of citizens of India despite its vast diversity. The route followed was from Haddo to Marina Park transiting through Delanipur, Gandhi Statue and Aberdeen Bazaar to spread awareness regarding 75 yrs of independence en-route.
After the Walkathon, beach cleanship was organized at Marina Park in coordination with PBMC. The aim of Walkathon and cleanship was to create awareness so as to ‘Reduce use of plastic and prevent it from destroying marine environment’ and to ‘highlight the demerits of marine pollution caused by disposing plastics/ bags, other non-degradable items’. The event also intended to inculcate amongst the general populace, the necessity of keeping the beaches clean/ safeguarding our environment and instilling the habit of waste management to prevent marine pollution.
