Port Blair, Aug 01: Highlighting about the problems being faced by people of North and Middle Andaman, the Member of Parliament of Andaman and Nicobar Island, Mr. Kuldeep Rai Sharma has requested the Lt. Governor of A & N Islands to Provide Hearse (Mortuary Van) service for people of North and Middle Andaman
In a letter mailed to the Lt. Governor, the Member of Parliament pointed out that in case of death of any Islander from North and Middle Andaman at Port Blair, the Port Blair Municipal Council earlier used to provide Hearse (Mortuary Van) to carry deceased person to North and Middle Andaman region but since last couple of months, the PBMC has withdrawn this service for various reasons.
The MP added that this move of PBMC has left many people of North and Middle Andaman, totally helpless. Those who hail from financially weak families are worst hit as to carry a deceased person from Port Blair to N & M Andaman in Private Vehicles, one has to pay nearly Rs. 15,000 to Rs. 20,000 to private vehicle owners, he said.
Considering the suffering of people of North and Middle Andaman, the Member of Parliament requested the Lt. Governor to issue necessary directions to PBMC to resume the service of providing Hearse to people for carrying deceased people to North and Middle Andaman.
The MP mentioned that in case PBMC is unable to provide this service the Department of Rural Development or Social Welfare may be given the responsibilities of arranging Hearse (Mortuary Van) to people of North and Middle Andaman in highly subsidized rate, whenever needed.
