Port Blair, Oct 26: ‘BEACON’ (Building Energy Awareness on Conservation) is a school education programme on energy conservation and its efficient use implemented by The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) with support from the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE) in 22 states and UTs of India including Andaman & Nicobar Islands.
A sensitization workshop on energy conservation was organized by TERI in collaboration with the Directorate of Education at Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School, Port Blair on 26th October 2012. Dr R Dev Das, Director (Education), inaugurated the workshop. Dr Suman Devi, DEO (Science), Ms Suma, Science Consultant from the Directorate of Education, Dr Brij Mohan Bhatt, Principal, Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School, Port Blair and Ms Savitri Singh, Assistant Engineer (NRSE) Department of Power were present on the occasion. The workshop was conducted by the members from the Educating Youth for Sustainable Development Division of TERI – New Delhi headed by Ms Ranjana Saikia.
A total of 100 participants including students, teachers and parents from various schools attended the workshop. To appraise the student participants, hands on activities like slogan-cum-sketching competition, and group activity on energy and its conservation were also organized on the occasion and the winners were awarded with cash prizes, solar torches and certificates. Resource materials like manuals and flip charts, participation certificates etc. were also distributed to the participants.
In addition, nodal schools such as Govt. Model Sr. Secondary School, Port Blair, Govt. Sr. Sec. School, Sabari, and Govt. Model Sr. Sec. School, Sitanagar from Port Blair, Rangat and Diglipur zones respectively, presented activity based project presentations on energy conservation highlighting major activities undertaken by respective schools at their school level.
Activities like training workshop for teachers, and survey questionnaires for students had also been organized during different phases of the project. Mr Sanjay Seth from BEE, and Ms Krishna Bharali from TERI oversee the project in various phases.
