Port Blair, Feb 03: The National Highway Infrastructural Development Corporation Limited (NHIDCL) is hopeful to compete, the Humphrey Strait Creek Bridge, which is said to be Andaman’s biggest and longest bridge, by March 2021 and open the bridge for public by May 2021.
Talking to Andaman Sheekha a senior officer of NHIDCL said that 90 percent work for the bridge is already over. “We are hopeful to complete 100 percent work by March 2021 and by May 2021 we are hopeful to open the bridge for public,” said the NHIDCL officers, who does not want his name to be quoted.
According to NHIDCL sources the construction work of the Humphrey Strait Creek Bridge having total 1.45Km length, rated as the biggest & longest bridge under construction in A&N Islands,is progressing well.
The construction work for the project started in the month of April, 2017. The total length of the bridge is 1450 mtrs. According to NHIDCL, in the bridge, a provision has been kept for pedestrian passage of 1.5 mtrs width on both crash barrier and RCC railing for safety of vehicles crossing the bridge.
As per details, total height of the bridge from sea level is varying to maximum 23 mtrs and a span of 60 mtrs has been kept in between the piers for easy movement of smaller vessels. The total contract value of the project is 202.90 crores.
Since last several decade people of Andaman Islands have been demanding for two major bridges over Humphrey Strait Creek and Middle Strait Creek, which will connect Andaman Trunk Road, and make the journey of Andaman Trunk Road shorter.
While Humphrey Strait Creek is nearing to completion, the work for construction of another major bridge over Middle Strait Creek has recently started.
