Port Blair, Dec 09: ICAR-KVK, N&M Andaman celebrated World Soil Day 2020 with theme Keep soil alive, Protect soil biodiversity at Padmanabhpuram, Betapur on 5th December 2020. The programme was inaugurated in presence of Mr. A.T. Roa, Zilla Parisad Member, Nimbutala, Rangat along with Subject Matter Specialists of KVK, N&M Andaman, officers of line department and farmer participants. Mr. Debabrata Basantia while welcoming the Chief Guest and participants highlighted the importance of Soil health management for soil biodiversity.
He also described the significance of top soil, soil fertility and its management in Island ecosystem. Dr. Shailesh Kumar, SMS (Fisheries) apprise the gathering about importance of world soil day and need of organic farming in North and Middle Andaman. He also highlighted on role of microorganisms in maintaining soil fertility.
Mr. Tanmai Paul, Farm Manager held detailed interactive session on genesis of soil, Physical, chemical and biological properties and role of plan nutrients in sustaining farm productivity. Mr. Dinesh Majhi, Agriculture Assistant, Department of Agriculture emphasised on method of soil conservation practices in N&M Andaman. Speaking on the occasion the Chief Guest Mr. A.T. Rao appreciated role of KVK, N&M Andaman in imparting knowledge to farmer of Shivapuram panchayat.
Mr. Rao also sensitized farmers about efforts taken by PRIs to conserve natural ecosystem in Middle Andaman. Farmers showed keen interest during the programme and clarified issues of farming.
The programmed was conducted as per the direction of ATARI Kolkata and under the guidance of Director, ICAR-CIARI, Port Blair. A total 22 numbers of Farmers and farm women were benefitted from the programme.
